This is the seamless way to switch from light-hearted magic to your favourite mentalism routine.
Explaining to your audience that you originally started at a young age practising magic tricks but as you progressed you became interested in the magic of the human mind; you offer to demonstrate to the audience the difference between the magician and the mentalist.
You show two sets of five ESP symbols placing them together as one pile, then mixing and cutting them. The cards are then dealt into two face-down packets and two members of your audience are given one packet each to shuffle and thoroughly mix.
While you turn your back, they are both instructed to take a card each from their packet, remember its ESP sign, then swop them with each other shuffling them into their two separate packets, and both shuffling their packet of ESP cards further. You then turn to face them and take just one of the packets, fanning them out and uncannily revealing the first chosen symbol, like a magician eliminating four cards, so that you’re left with just the first chosen sign.
Turning to the second participant you request her to simply picture her chosen symbol in her mind and without touching her cards or any funny business you can either slowly describe her mentally chosen sign in detail, or alternatively boldly draw it on a piece of paper or card; then asking her to divulge the symbol she is simply thinking in her mind and revealing your drawing exactly matches her thought of symbol!
Everything can be examined both before and after the effect, with no clue to the methods used. No force and no marked cards. You will do it straight out of the packet, no sleights or gimmicks are used. With the showmanship explained this will cause a real sensation. A great commercial routine.
